Try to keep any discussion centered on your feelings about observed behavior. A person with bipolar disorder needs to eat and so do you. If you want to be extravagant, cook the meal for your date. A low point does not automatically lead to serious depression, which calls for a doctor’s intervention.
In fact, I would suggest that you not talk about their disease at all, unless they want to. I am many things, and having bipolar is only one piece. I can’t help but reiterate a person with bipolar disorder that is under treatment wants what every person does. What does one do when the disease really appears to be altering your date’s behavior?
Here are my suggestions for dealing with a person who is acting out of the ordinary: I think it’s important to point out, however sad it may be, that the disease can affect a person negatively, and your feelings may get hurt.
Only you can decide whether to continue dating an individual with the disorder.
We naturally look at the situation from our own perspective with preconceptions of what we think is correct.
I promise you- there will eventually come a point where the Survivor in the relationship will do something so mind-boggling that it laughs in the face of the person you know and love.
I aim to provide you with meaningful tools to help not only the Survivor in your life but allow the supporter to preserve themselves in the process.
It is not likely that you will ever truly be able to understand what the other person in the relationship equation experiences either with, or coping with, a Mood Disorder.
At times, the Survivor will behave almost like a different person to the point where you may not recognize their mentality.
It is a constant battle in our mind to try and avoid tearing our lives, loves, and friendships down to the foundation. We will periodically lose that battle and burn bridges.
It is an unavoidable fact of living with a mood disorder or mental illness.
We want intimacy, understanding, and ultimately, love.
Having stated what I consider obvious, I’ll give some thought to what many see as the difficulties of dating a person with bipolar disorder.
These are the times we do the most damage to our lives.
